HYDERABAD: The BRS on Friday said the results of the municipal elections were a reflection of the growing support among the people for the party, and how the people are no longer willing to believe the governance claims of the Congress.

Addressing a press conference in the evening as the picture became clear – including how 30 municipalities were hung with no clear majority for any party – BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao said the results are a clear verdict on how only the BRS remained the principal opposition party in the state.

He said the BRS, which won 15 municipalities, and emerged as the single largest party in another 10 to 15 civic bodies and holds a decisive influence in them, and added that these achievements came in the face of intense pressure, alleged misuse of money power, administrative machinery, and intimidation tactics by the ruling party.

Rama Rao said the fact that traditionally the ruling party sweeps the local body elections, as was the case with the BRS in 2020 when it won 122 mayor and chairperson posts out of 130. Today’s results clearly show that the Congress has failed on this front just as it did in the recent panchayat elections in which BRS won 40 per cent of the gram panchayats with 4,000 sarpanches now in the state from the BRS.

Rama Rao also accused the Congress of post-election luring, forcibly taking away winning candidates from other parties in a bid to influence the final outcomes. He said the BRS would take a call on its next steps in the municipalities where hung verdicts were given by taking into account the local leadership’s views. “We left the elections pretty much to the local leaders as they are the best judges and will follow the same principle now, we will also be discussing all these issues with KCR, we have two days’ time before all things fall into place.”
