Charminar— DC File

HYDERABAD:The Machli Kaman, one of the gateways near historic Charminar, will undergo restoration at an estimated cost of `1.3 crore, with work scheduled to begin on November 1 as part of the Pathergatti facelift programme.

Deccan Terrain Heritage will undertake the restoration under the supervision of the Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority. The project follows the collapse of a portion of the historic structure's facade a few months ago.

Mir Khan, founder of Deccan Terrain Heritage, said the work would focus on structural strengthening, conservation and repairs using traditional techniques, including lime mortar, to preserve the structure's original character.

Heritage activists said Sher-e-Batil Kaman, another historic gateway located to the west of Charminar, was also in a severely deteriorated condition and required immediate restoration.

Machli Kaman dates back to the Qutb Shahi period. The four gateways near Charminar were constructed around 1594. Machli Kaman is associated with the traditional display of a large fish-shaped structure during the lunar year.
