Hyderabad: Half the wards in urban local bodies in Telangana will elect women corporators, in line with the government’s policy of reserving 50 per cent of the seats to women. Of the 131 urban local bodies (ULBs), 50 per cent will have a woman heading it as either a mayor or a chairperson.

Among the major civic bodies that will be headed by women are the GHMC, when elections are held, as well as Khammam, Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar (BC), according to the reservations finalised by the state government on Saturday for 10 municipal corporation and 121 municipalities.

The draw of lots was held at the office of the commissioner and director of municipal administration.

The chair of five municipalities have been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community, 17 for Scheduled Castes (SC), and 38 for Backward Classes (BC), leaving 61 posts for general category candidates, including at Kodangal, Kosgi, Gadwal.

Kalluru, Bhoothpur, Mahbubabad have been reserved for the ST community and Station Ghanpur, Huzurabad and Vikarabad for the SCs. Mulugu, Parigi and Kollapur are among those reserved for BC community candidates.

For six ULBs —GHMC, Khammam, GWMC, Siddipet, Pottur and Nakrekal —the reservation for mayors and chairpersons was finalized on Saturday but reservation for wards has not been done yet as their tenure has not ended.

“We have completed the process based on data,” said T.K. Sreedevi, commissioner and director of municipal administration addressing a press conference.
A source said that the election notification was likely to be issued after January 20, after the matter is discussed by the Cabinet on Sunday . The notification will not include the GHMC where the term of the council will end on February 10. Elections are likely to be held in February last week,” said a source.
