Hyderabad: Krupalatha, who figures as a recipient in the Saroornagar kidney racket case and who underwent a transplant, was found in Alakananda Hospital on January 21 in an absolutely poor state. Following detection of an infection, she was shifted to Gandhi Hospital. However, as she was averse to getting treated in Gandhi Hospital, she was moved to Nims Hospital, from where, post-recovery, she was discharged recently.

On raiding Alakananda Hospital, officials found that the facilities were abysmal.

At Nims, she underwent specialised procedures and scanning. As Krupalatha’s health had stabilised after 15 days of observation, she was discharged recently.

Meanwhile, Jeevandan officials are pointing out the importance of having ethical committees in superspeciality hospitals to monitor transplant cases specifically.

Pointing out the lapses of transplantation procedures in hospitals, Jeevandan officials said that ethical committees can keep track of the procedures and possible financial transactions between the donor and the beneficiary.

A source said that there are two types of transplantations and there was scope of financial deals in both instances, which is what makes having ethical committees a dire necessity.

Incidentally, Nims is the only hospital in the state to have an ethical committee. Officials point out that ensuring such committees across hospitals can help minimise the number of illegal organ transplants.
