HYDERABAD: Shia Muslims in Hyderabad to observe Arbaeen (Chehlum) on Friday, coinciding with 20 Safar in the Islamic calendar. It is being observed with deep religious reverence and solemnity, marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
Ramchander Rao unveiled a special poster for Arbaeen-2025, which marks the end of a forty-day mourning period observed by Shias to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala, on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Mir Firasath Ali Baqri highlighted the deep religious significance of Arbaeen and recalled the historic Battle of Karbala in 61 Hijri, where Imam Hussain, along with his family members and companions, were martyred after refusing to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad Caliph Yazid, an act remembered as a defining stand for justice, truth and moral integrity.
In Shia Islam, the remembrance of Karbala and the observance of Arbaeen symbolise the eternal struggle between good and evil, embodying the ideals of self-sacrifice and resistance to oppression.

The main procession starts at Kotla Alijah and ends at Alawa-e-Sartauq, Darulshifa, Throughout the city, including Moula Ali and other Ashurkhanas, mourners beat their chests in grief and recite nohas (elegies) in remembrance of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice.
