Rainy Spell Forecast For TG From Sept. 17

HYDERABAD: Telangana is likely to see a prolonged spell of rain and thunderstorms from Thursday, with rainfall expected at a few places on September 17 and 18 and at many places from September 19 to 22, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad.

An upper‑air cyclonic circulation over north Thailand is likely to emerge over the north Andaman Sea on Sept. 18, after which a low‑pressure area is expected to form on Sept. 19. The system is forecast to intensify gradually and move west‑northwest towards the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the following three to four days. “An upper‑air cyclonic circulation over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Rayalaseema is also present at 1.5 km above mean sea level,” the IMD report said.

For Telangana, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places on Sept. 17 and 18, followed by rain at many places on Sept. 19–22. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places on Sept. 19 and 20, with isolated heavy rain forecast across the state on Sept. 21 and 22. “Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are also likely at isolated places on Sept. 17–20, with the warning extending across the state on Sept. 20,” an IMD scientist told Deccan Chronicle.

The forecast comes as Telangana remains 19 per cent below its normal cumulative monsoon rainfall. From June 1 to Sept. 16, the state received 536.5 mm against the normal 664.5 mm. Hyderabad has received 429.4 mm against 540.6 mm, leaving the city with a 21 per cent deficit.

Weather blogger Balaji T., analysing the coming spell, expects powerful thunderstorms between September 17 and 25 and estimates that Telangana’s rainfall could reach 600–640 mm and Hyderabad’s 530–560 mm by the end of September. On that basis, he expects the state’s final deficit to improve to 14–18 per cent.
