Railways Seeks 13 Acres of RTC Land For Kacheguda Station Makeover

Hyderabad: Indian Railways has proposed acquiring around 13 acres of land belonging to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) in front of Kacheguda railway station as part of plans to redevelop the facility into a world-class terminal.

The proposal, at a preliminary stage now, was under consideration of the TGSRTC managing director, sources said. The RTC management has reportedly indicated interest in a land swap arrangement, though no final decision has been taken.

Under the proposal, TGSRTC land parcels at Kacheguda, including old RTC quarters and a depot at Kacheguda and Barkatpura, would be taken over by Railways. In exchange, the Railways has offered land parcels of equivalent extent — about 13 acres — at locations including behind the RTC depot at Kacheguda, near the RRI close to Secunderabad station, Chilkalguda, and the old railway quarters.

A senior official said, “Under the proposal, Railways would take over TGSRTC land at Kacheguda and offer the corporation railway land of an equivalent extent at Kacheguda and Chilkalguda in exchange.”

Kacheguda station, a key rail terminal in Hyderabad, currently operates from a more than century-old heritage building. However, limited vacant land has constrained expansion, prompting the redevelopment proposal.

There is no clarity yet on whether the existing heritage structure will be retained or altered as part of the project.

Built in 1916 during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the station served as the headquarters of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway. It features Indo-Saracenic architecture with Gothic elements, including domes, minarets and wooden staircases connecting the ground level to upper-floor offices.
