Hyderabad: Thousands of students under the R22 regulation at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) have demanded the introduction of grace marks, saying the absence of the provision is affecting their academic progress, while students under other regulations already receive the benefit.

R22 refers to the academic regulations applicable to students admitted under JNTUH’s 2022 academic framework across courses such as B.Tech, B.Pharmacy, MBA, MCA, MTech and other programmes. Students on Monday sought implementation of grace marks for R22 students and submitted a representation to JNTUH registrar Prof. K. Venkateswara Rao.

Jahnavi B, a student, told Deccan Chronicle that while grace marks are available under R18, R21 and R23 regulations, those under R22 remain excluded despite facing similar academic requirements. Several students said even a small shortfall in marks was leading to backlogs, delaying placements, higher studies applications and semester progression.

“Many students are missing by one or two marks and losing an entire semester because there is no grace marks provision for R22,” said Rahul, a B.Tech student. “Students under other regulations have the facility, so naturally there is frustration about why only one batch is being left out,” he said.

Another student, Pranay, said the issue was creating anxiety among final-year students preparing for placements and competitive examinations. “Backlogs affect confidence, internships and recruitment opportunities. We’re asking for the same academic support already being given to others,” he said.

According to students, who met university officials, the registrar assured them that the matter would be discussed with senior authorities and concerned officials before a decision is taken. Students said they hoped the university would take a decision keeping in mind the future prospects of thousands studying under the R22 regulation.
