Adilabad: House listing under the first phase of National Census 2027 is under way across Telangana, but enumerators in several areas are facing poor response from households during data collection.

District and state officials are closely monitoring the process following complaints of errors in data uploading. The second phase of the Census, involving collection of detailed individual information, is scheduled to begin in February 2027.

Officials said enumerators are currently collecting basic household information as part of the house listing exercise being conducted from May 11 to June 9.

District collectors are supervising enumerators, nodal officers and supervisors involved in the Census process and stressing the need for error-free data collection, as future state and Central government planning would be based on the information gathered.

The prevailing heatwave conditions have also affected field work, with many enumerators carrying out surveys during morning hours to avoid high temperatures.

Telangana Census director Bharati Holikeri is monitoring the process and has directed enumerators to complete house listing without errors.

Enumerators, however, said many families were reluctant to cooperate. An enumerator from Adilabad town, speaking on condition of anonymity, said several residents were hesitant to open doors or gates after learning that officials had come for Census work.

The enumerator said many families feared they could lose welfare benefits if details of vehicles or houses were linked with Aadhaar and government schemes. Some residents were even covering their vehicles during visits by enumerators, he added.

At the same time, officials said several families were cooperating fully and providing information for uploading on the Census portal.

Officials said around 12,000 families in Adilabad district had already uploaded their details through self-enumeration.

Adilabad collector Rajarshi Shah said enumerators were collecting information in 1,293 blocks across the district and urged residents who had completed self-enumeration to keep their SE-ID ready to help speed up the process.
