NALGONDA: Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Saturday accused the previous BRS government of showing little concern for addressing the problems of the poor, particularly in urban areas, during its 10-year rule.

Laying the foundation stone for CC roads, a bus stand and junction development works at Yedulapuram in Khammam district, the minister said the earlier government had not issued new ration cards for a decade, affecting food security in the state.

He said that after coming to power, the Congress government issued new ration cards and also provided a facility to include newly added family members in existing cards. He added that Telangana had become the first state in the country to supply fine rice to ration cardholders.

Referring to hostels, the minister said diet and cosmetic charges for students were not revised for 10 years under the previous regime, which resulted in denial of nutritious food and basic facilities.

He said the Congress government increased diet charges by 40 per cent and cosmetic charges by 200 per cent. The state government would not compromise on the implementation of welfare schemes and development programmes, he added.

Stating that the people had voted the Congress to power two years ago, Srinivas Reddy said the government would honour its election promises.

He assured that Indiramma houses would be sanctioned to all eligible poor families over the next three years. The second phase of the housing scheme would be launched in April, he said, adding that about 4.5 lakh houses had already been sanctioned in the first phase.

The minister said infrastructure development and drinking water supply works were being taken up in both urban and rural areas to improve living conditions, and asserted that the state government would always stand by the poor. Later, the minister laid the foundation stone for CC roads and drainage works worth ₹4 crore in Vidhyanagar area of Khammam city.

He said the colony had come up nearly a decade ago but lacked basic infrastructure. Over the past two years, the Congress government had sanctioned ₹12 crore for development works in the area, and CC roads would be laid in all streets of Vidhyanagar within a year.

Khammam municipal corporation chairman Abhishek Augustya was present at the programme.
