Hyderabad: The Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh, which was given a national project status by the Centre, is likely to be discussed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a high-level meeting on May 28. Sources said Modi was expected to interact with the Chief Ministers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh during a video conference to discuss various aspects of the project.

Telangana has been raising concerns over submergence in the state in the backwaters of the Godavari river once the Polavaram project begins impounding water. It had taken these concerns to the notice of the jal shakti ministry and the Central Water Commission earlier. Odisha and Chhattisgarh have raised similar concerns.

The project envisages diverting 80 tmc ft of water from Godavari to River Krishna with the water to be shared between the states that are party to the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal, including Maharashtra and Karnataka. Chhattisgarh and Odisha are to be given 1.5 tmc ft and 5 tmc ft as their share of the water from the project.
