PD Act Invoked Against Cybercrime Offender in Cyberabad

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh, invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against a matrimonial fraudster - Manda Venkata Kameshu alias Karthik Reddy as “Cyber Crime Offender” and detained him in central prison in Cherlapalli with a view to prevent him from indulging in further cheating activities.
The detenu is a native of West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh and a B. Tech graduate. With an intention to earn easy money and lead a luxurious lifestyle, he deliberately targeted unmarried women seeking matrimonial alliances through various matrimonial websites.
He created fake profiles and falsely projected himself as a well-settled NRI with good educational qualifications, a reputed family background and a high-paying job. He also used fictitious names, including “Karthik Reddy,” to conceal his true identity.
After establishing contact with the victims through matrimonial applications, WhatsApp and Instagram, he gained their confidence by engaging them in emotional conversations and giving false assurances of marriage.
Once their trust was secured, he induced them to transfer money by citing fabricated reasons such as his sister’s educational expenses, bank-related problems, urgent financial requirements and transaction-limit restrictions.
He also obtained their credit card details, OTPs, bank account credentials and other confidential financial information and subsequently misused the same for unauthorized financial transactions and online betting activities.
He has been involved in 19 such cheating offences since the year 2021. He was arrested by the Cyber Crime Police, Cyberabad, and was lodged in jail. He is now detained under the PD Act.
