HYDERABAD: Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay Kumar said patriotism is more than a slogan, citing the sacrifice of Jan Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee as an example. Speaking on Dr Mookerjee’s birth anniversary while laying floral tributes, Sanjay described his death as a major sacrifice for national unity and said the Narendra Modi government is carrying forward Dr Mookerjee’s vision by abrogating Article 370 and strengthening defence preparedness.

Sanjay highlighted government initiatives such as Make in India and Start-up India as efforts to advance self-reliance. “Many have spoken for the country, very few have given their lives for it. Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee’s name will remain immortal among them,” he said.

Recounting Mookerjee’s campaign against travel permits for Kashmir, Sanjay said Dr Mookerjee asked why any citizen should require permission to visit their own country and led the fight against Article 370. He said Dr Mookerjee was unlawfully detained and kept in poor conditions on his return from Kashmir and later died in suspicious circumstances, without a proper investigation at the time. Sanjay added that the subsequent withdrawal of the permit requirement for travel to Kashmir was an achievement later associated with the BJP.
