Hyderabad: Months after killing her parents, a 25-year-old nurse Surekha committed suicide in her hostel at Shantinagar in Sangareddy on Sunday night.

Surekha was staying in the hostel after she was released on bail after being arrested for killing her elderly parents Dasharatham (58) and Lakshmi (54) in January 2026 at their house at Vikarabad by administering high doses of sedatives for opposing inter-caste marriage.

The couple was blessed with three daughters and a son. Except for the third daughter, Surekha (25), all of them are married. While working as a nurse in a private hospital in Sangareddy, Surekha met a driver from Kondapur mandal of Sangareddy district on Instagram.

When Surekha told her parents about this, her parents strongly opposed it due to caste differences, and they were arranging a marriage for her elsewhere. On January 24, Surekha returned home with sedatives stolen from the hospital where she worked.

That night, she told her mother Lakshmi, who suffered from chronic pain, that she had obtained an injection to help her sleep. Trusting her daughter, Lakshmi agreed, but the high dosage proved fatal.

Later, when her father Dasharath returned home, Surekha convinced him he was exhausted from farm work and injected him with the same sedative. Both died in their sleep.

The next morning, Surekha pretended to cry and told neighbours her parents were not waking up. Her brother Ashok grew suspicious and rushed them to hospital, but they were declared dead.

Based on his complaint, Dharur police registered a case. Initially suspected to be suicide due to debts, postmortem reports confirmed the death by sedative overdose. Surekha was detained, gave contradictory statements, and eventually confessed. She was released on bail recently and started staying in a hostel. She killed herself in the manner she killed her parents.
