HYDERABAD: Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao said sports was a vital force in youth development and nation-building, and noted that the Modi government had invested massively and drawn up schemes that have propelled India from Olympic also-rans to medal contenders.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 41st National Senior Kyorugi Championship at the GMC Balayogi indoor stadium at Gachchibowli, Rao noted the transformation in India's sporting fortunes. "Earlier, we weren't even able to win a bronze medal. Now, our players are winning gold, silver, and bronze even in the Olympics," he said.
Rao said the Modi government was spending 130 times more on sports compared to the period before 2014. He praised initiatives like Khelo India for sharpening youth skills and unearthing hidden talent.
"Sports competitions will unearth more talent in the youth and provide opportunities to participate at national and international levels," the state BJP chief said. Echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, Rao linked sports to the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' goal.
The BJP leader described sports as a "powerful guiding force in nation-building," visible through sustained government programme.
Welcoming participants, Rao said: "Enjoy the hospitality of Hyderabad and our world-famous delicious Hyderabadi biryani."
