NRIs See Blue Congress As Bulwark Against Trump’s Policies
Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a major setback to Trump's Republican Party.
Hyderabad:Indian-origin residents in the United States have welcomed the Democratic Party's sweeping victories in the midterm elections, expressing hope that the party's control of Congress will prevent US President Donald Trump from pursuing further anti-immigrant measures.
The Democratic victory has been significant in states with sizable Telugu and Indian-origin populations, including Texas, New Jersey and Illinois. Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a major setback to Trump's Republican Party.
In Texas, Democrats secured historic victories, with James Talarico defeating Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race and Gina Hinojosa defeating incumbent Governor Greg Abbott. The party also made significant gains in the state legislature. In New Jersey, Democratic candidates retained key seats and flipped two Republican-held congressional constituencies. Illinois continued to favour Democrats, with Governor JB Pritzker securing a historic third term.
Democratic control of both chambers could make it harder for the administration to push through restrictive immigration legislation. It could also lead to greater congressional scrutiny of immigration enforcement and policies affecting foreign nationals.
Kumar Chakrapani, an Indian-American living in Texas, said, “It is a really good result. Having a Republican stronghold like Texas move towards Democrats indicates how people want change. A Democratic-controlled Congress can put President Trump’s anti-immigration agenda on check.”
Another Indian-American, who requested not to be named, said “I don’t think anyone anticipated such a blue wave across the country. These results will force Trump to rethink his agenda on immigration policy, war and core issues like inflation.”
