Hyderabad: The long-pending demand for vehicle registration at showrooms will become a reality in about a fortnight. The transport department on Thursday issued a government order (GO) allowing registration of new vehicles without visiting the RTO.

Under the new system, buyers of motorcycles and cars will no longer be required to take their vehicles to RTOs for first-time registration.

The move, first indicated by transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar in May 2024 during an interaction with Deccan Chronicle, aims to simplify procedures for new vehicle owners. The new facility will come into effect within two weeks. Taxes and registration fees will remain unchanged.

RTA officials welcomed the decision, noting that RTOs are under heavy workload, with around 3,000 vehicles being registered across the state every day. The registrations will be processed through the Sarathi portal, the transport department’s centralised online platform.

As per the new system, newly purchased non-transport motorcycles and motor cars will not be required to be produced at the RTO office for initial registration.

The facility applies to fully built vehicles sold through authorised automobile dealers, in accordance with Rule 48-B of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Under this mechanism, the authorised dealer will apply online for permanent registration on behalf of the buyer. Required documents, including the invoice, Form-21, Form-22, insurance details, address proof and vehicle photographs, will be uploaded online by the dealer.

After scrutiny by a transport department official, a registration number will be allotted, and the Registration Certificate (RC) will be dispatched directly to the vehicle owner through speed post.

Automobile dealers have welcomed the state government’s decision to allow vehicle registration at showrooms. Vijay Mohan, managing director of Sansai Motors Group, said the move would benefit vehicle buyers. He said that many customers face difficulties spending long hours standing in queues at RTA offices, often losing an entire day. He added that dealers were fully prepared to implement the new registration process once it came into effect.
