Hyderabad: Fifty-two national highways (NHs) projects covering 1,423 km length were under construction in Telangana. These projects were taken up at a cost of Rs.25,323 crore, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The Central government has incurred expenditure of Rs.25,000 crore on development and maintenance of NHs in Telangana since April, 2019. It has also taken up preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for northern Regional Ring Road (RRR) of Hyderabad, he said.

The Union Minister further stated that no proposal for development of greenfield radial roads connecting the Outer Ring Road to northern RRR is under consideration of the government. He said the Central government allocates and releases funds for State governments including Telangana and Union Territories (UTs) for development and maintenance of State Roads under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme as per provisions of the amended CRIF Act, 2000.

Accordingly, the government has released Rs.1,722 crore to Telangana for development and maintenance of State roads under CRIF scheme since April, 2019.

According to the Union Minister, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is primarily responsible for development and maintenance of national highways. Development and maintenance of NHs is a continuous process. Works on NHs, including development of greenfield sections, are accordingly taken up based on the traffic density, condition of the road, inter-se priority and synergy with PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP).

Gadkari stated this while responding to a question posed by Congress MP Ch Kiran Kumar Reddy in Lok Sabha on Thursday seeking whether Telangana government was planning to develop 10 new greenfield radial roads alongside metro corridor connecting outer ring road to proposed RRR and has requested the Ministry to sanction Rs.45,000 crore as financial assistance.
