Hyderabad: The Directorate of Medical Education has proposed a significant increase in undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and super-speciality seats across government medical colleges, while four state-run medical colleges have also sought approval for an additional 110 UG seats and 465 PG seats.

Several private medical colleges, particularly in Hyderabad, have also applied for enhancement of UG and PG seats in line with growing demand for medical education.

NMC had initiated an increase in seats before its scrapping of MBBS seats beyond 150 this year in April. Additionally, the commission had removed the requirement mandating a ratio of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population in a state or Union Territory.

Officials told Deccan Chronicle that applications for seat enhancement have already been submitted as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has initiated physical inspections of government medical colleges. It has already been completed at Siddipet and Mahbubnagar medical colleges, while reports are expected to be submitted digitally within two months.

“NMC has advised colleges with adequate faculty strength and infrastructure to apply for seat enhancement. Accordingly, proposals have been submitted for UG, PG and super-speciality courses,” a senior official told Deccan Chronicle.

Under the UG expansion proposals, Mahbubnagar and Siddipet government medical colleges have sought an increase of 25 seats each, taking the intake from 175 to 200. Adilabad and Nizamabad government medical colleges have applied for an increase of 30 seats each, from 120 to 150 seats.

Officials said NMC inspection teams carried out extensive verification covering all aspects of the institutions, including outpatient and inpatient services, infrastructure, workload, human resources, faculty strength, birth and death records, departmental performance, hostel facilities and statutory registers.
