NIZAMABAD: District collector T. Vinay Krishna Reddy on Thursday instructed officials to strictly monitor the door-to-door garbage collection system and intensify public awareness to prevent indiscriminate dumping of waste on roads.
Accompanied by municipal commissioner Dilip Kumar and deputy commissioner Ravibabu, the collector visited several localities and reviewed sanitation works at the ground level. He inspected areas near the Yellammagutta railway underbridge and major junctions in Gayatri Nagar, where roadside dumping has been reported, and issued directions to curb the practice.
The collector said residents should be encouraged to hand over garbage only to collection vehicles visiting their homes. He directed officials to step up awareness campaigns through flex boards, banners and public announcements, clearly informing citizens that fines would be imposed for dumping garbage on roads. Public cooperation was essential to keep the city clean and prevent sanitation-related problems, he said.
He also instructed officials to ensure regular cleaning of drainage canals, giving priority to public health. Wherever feasible, JCB machines should be used for desilting drains, he said. The collector further directed that vacant plots along roadsides be cleaned and that extensive plantation be taken up to improve greenery, with strict measures to protect the saplings.
Later, the collector inspected the dumping yard on the outskirts of Nagaram. He reviewed the storage and processing of waste collected daily through door-to-door collection within municipal limits. He examined waste segregation practices and the use of machinery for compost production and other processing, and sought detailed information from officials.
The collector enquired about the average quantity of waste processed daily, the supply of compost, and related operational details. He instructed officials to ensure separate collection of wet and dry waste to facilitate biomining. He also directed the contract agency to immediately procure two additional waste-processing machines proposed for compost production and to commence operations without delay.
