Hyderabad: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Tuesday inaugurated a dedicated Fetal Medicine Facility, equipped to provide 2D and 3D fetal ultrasound scans along with invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS).

The availability of advanced equipment has significantly reduced costs, with procedures that typically range between ₹5,000 and ₹8,000 in private hospitals now offered at NIMS for ₹1,000–₹3,000.

The facility was inaugurated by NIMS director Prof. Nagari Bheerappa, alongside Dr. Shagun Agarwal, head of the Department of Medical Genetics and in-charge of the Fetal Medicine Facility.

Established under the Department of Medical Genetics—recognised as a centre of excellence for rare diseases under the Government of India’s National Rare Disease Policy — the facility marks a milestone in maternal and child healthcare.

Prof. Bheerappa said the launch would enable early detection of genetic and fetal abnormalities, allowing timely medical intervention. Dr. Agarwal noted that prenatal diagnostic services have been available since 2013, and the new facility further strengthens them. She added that in 2025 alone, around 780 high-risk pregnancy ultrasounds and 500 invasive diagnostic procedures have been conducted, serving patients from Telangana and neighbouring states.
