NHRC To Hear 109 Human Rights Violation Cases In Telangana

HYDERABAD: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, will conduct a two-day ‘Open Hearing and Camp Sitting’ in Hyderabad on July 28 and 29, to hear 109 cases of alleged human rights violations from Telangana, with the aim of expediting justice for the victims.

The commission will also interact with senior officers of the state government to sensitise them on human rights issues, and will meet representatives of civil society, NGOs, and human rights defenders to discuss prevailing concerns. A media briefing is scheduled to follow.

The camp sitting will be chaired by NHRC chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, along with Members Justice (Dr) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Vijaya Bharathi Sayani. The hearings will take place in the presence of the complainants and concerned state officials at the MCR HRD Institute, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, starting at 10 am on July 28.

NHRC secretary general Bharat Lal, director general (investigation) R.P. Meena, registrar (Law) Joginder Singh, and other senior NHRC officers will also be present.

The cases to be taken up include alleged abuse of power by police personnel; denial of benefits under various social welfare schemes; irregularities in jails; negligence in protecting the rights of members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities; violations of students’ rights; issues concerning women’s rights, especially health challenges faced by pregnant and lactating mothers; human trafficking.
