Narayanpet-Kodangal Lift Irrigation Scheme Proposal Gets A Boost
The scheme, proposed to be taken up at a cost of ₹2,945 crore envisages providing drinking water to Narayanpet district in addition to irrigating around one lakh acres in Narayanpet, Kodangal and Makthal Assembly constituencies: Reports
HYDERABAD: The Narayanpet-Kodangal lift irrigation scheme proposal has received a boost with the state government getting the go-ahead from the Centre to prepare the environment impact assessment (EIA) and environment management plan (EMP) reports.
The decision to issue terms of reference for preparing the EIA and EMP for the project was taken at the meeting of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) constituted by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change at its August 23 meeting.
The scheme, proposed to be taken up at a cost of ₹2,945 crore envisages providing drinking water to Narayanpet district in addition to irrigating around one lakh acres in Narayanpet, Kodangal and Makthal Assembly constituencies.
Though there were concerns over the Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) saying the work cannot be taken up without the required environmental studies, the setting of terms of reference for the scheme has paved the way for the scheme.
In its orders dated August 23, the SEIAA provided a detailed set of terms to be followed for the environmental studies. Once the reports are submitted, they will be vetted if the terms of reference have been met, and whether the project proposal can move forward with respect to receiving environmental clearances.
