Nalgonda: A 22-year-old youth died after accidentally falling into an open well while switching on a pump set in an agricultural field at Lingaram Thanda in Kusumanchi mandal of Khammam district on Monday.
The deceased, Banothu Ajay, was pursuing a degree course in Khammam and had returned to his native village for the Dasara festival.
He went to the family’s agricultural field on the outskirts of Lingaram Thanda with his younger brother, Chanti, 16, and slipped into the open well while switching on the pump set.
Chanti raised an alarm, following which local residents rushed to the spot and pulled Ajay out of the well.
However, he had died by then.
Ajay’s father, Banoth Venkanna, had died by suicide a year ago after consuming pesticide.
Ajay’s death plunged Lingaram Thanda into gloom.
On receiving information, Kusumanchi police reached the spot and shifted the body to the government hospital mortuary at Palair for a post-mortem examination.
Based on a complaint lodged by Ajay’s mother, Vanitha, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.
