Monsoon Revives with Surplus Rain in Telangana
Water levels in Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs reflect this revival.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad awoke on Friday to a cloud-covered, breezy morning that remained dry through the day — a brief calm before a new wave of monsoon activity.
While precipitation held off overnight, the GHMC area now records a 30 per cent rainfall surplus, compared to the seven per cent deficit at the start of August. Across the state, average rainfall has shifted from 13 per cent below normal to 10 per cent above, driven by persistent showers in recent days. Southern districts remain waterlogged, while parts of northern Telangana are still recovering.
Water levels in Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs reflect this revival. As of 6 p.m. Friday, Osmansagar held 3.061 TMC at 1,786.25 ft (FTL: 1,790 ft), with inflows of 500 cusecs and no gates opened. Himayatsagar stood at 2.562 TMC (1,761.75 ft of 1,763.5 ft), receiving 1,800 cusecs; two gates were opened by 3 ft, discharging 1,927 cusecs.
Looking ahead, forecasts point to an active monsoon weekend. The IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain on Saturday, August 16, in seven districts — including Nirmal, Nizamabad, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Sangareddy, and Kamareddy — and a yellow alert for heavy rain across twelve others, including Warangal, Karimnagar, and Medak. Thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts of 30-40 km/h are widely expected. From Monday through midweek, most districts are forecast to see continued moderate to heavy showers.
With the monsoon regaining strength and weather systems poised to impact interior districts, residents — especially those in flood-prone neighbourhoods — have been urged to stay alert, avoid open drains during heavy spells, and follow advisories as the skies prepare to open up again.
