WARANGAL: Warangal traffic police have cracked down on modified silencers fitted to vehicles, citing their contribution to noise pollution and public inconvenience. Around 350 silencers seized from vehicles were crushed under a road roller at the Pochamma Maidan Circle here on Thursday.

The drive was carried out on the direction of police commissioner N. Shwetha, IPS, under the supervision of traffic additional DCP Rayala Prabhakar Rao. traffic ACP T. Satyanarayana, inspectors and other personnel participated in the programme.

The traffic police had seized the silencers during vehicle inspections after finding that they had been altered in violation of prescribed standards to produce excessive noise. The seized silencers were subsequently destroyed using a road roller.

Speaking on the occasion, Prabhakar Rao said the use of modified silencers resulted in excessive noise pollution and caused considerable inconvenience to the public. Students, elderly persons and those suffering from health problems were particularly affected by such noise, he said.

He advised motorists to use only the original silencers fitted by vehicle manufacturers and warned that legal action would be taken against those who modify silencers to produce excessive noise.

Traffic ACP T. Satyanarayana, inspectors including Sujatha and other personnel, were present.
