Hyderabad: The Methodist Church’s Hyderabad regional conference concluded on Sunday evening with the ordination of 30 elderly reverends and 11 deacons following a special worship service. Held once every four years, the three-day conference brought together clergy, lay representatives and heads of institutions from churches across nine districts. This 37th edition of the conference was formally inaugurated by Bishop A. Simeon, the resident bishop, who assumed charge of the Hyderabad Regional Conference on May 4.

The most exciting part of the conference was the internal elections. Contestants employed novel approaches to win the confidence of clergy and delegate voters, with contests intensifying as voting proceeded in close ballot rounds. The most fiercely contested posts were those of Lay Leader and Conference Treasurer. Rev. Muthu John was elected as Conference Secretary, while Rev. A. Steven was chosen as Executive Secretary. Major transfers were announced, notably at the Central Church in Hyderabad, where Rev. Sanjay Paul and Rev. D.H. Paul were appointed to lead the English service at Chapel Road.

The conference opened with a Holy Communion service attended by around 300 participants, each representing a church from across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. In his message, Bishop A. Simeon expounded on several Biblical themes, including discipleship and Christ’s “Eleventh Commandment” — “Love thy neighbour as thyself.” He urged the gathering to incorporate this principle into their daily lives.

Women from Secunderabad churches rendered a welcome song and children presented a dance performance. During session breaks, members also presented special songs to enrich the devotional atmosphere.

Leena Gloria Simeon, addressing the congregation, highlighted the role of women as partners in the spiritual journey. “Wives stand beside their husbands in all struggles. With prayer, any hurdle can be overcome,” she said.
