Mercury Up 2–4°C as Monsoon Weakens; Rain Likely to Bring Brief Respite
Some relief is expected as a low-pressure area develops over the Bay of Bengal.
Hyderabad:September has felt unusually hot and muggy across Telangana, with warm afternoons and little relief. Temperatures remain above normal in several districts even as the monsoon weakens.
“Due to weak monsoon conditions and clear sky, temperatures are 2 to 4 degrees above normal,” said Dr Y.V. Rama Rao, senior meteorologist and consultant scientist at Telangana Development & Planning Society. “They are in the range of 35 to 38°C over the state, while in the CURE region they are around 33 to 35°C, which is 2 to 3 degrees above normal.”
Latest IMD observations show Mahabubnagar at 36.5°C, 5.2°C above normal; Khammam at 35.4°C, 2.9°C above normal; and Bhadrachalam at 35.2°C, 2.5°C above normal. In Hyderabad, the maximum was 32.3°C, while the minimum was 25.2°C, 2.8°C above normal. Humidity in the city was 81 per cent on Thursday morning, adding to the discomfort.
Rao said weak monsoon conditions, limited cloud cover and reduced rainfall were allowing temperatures to rise and making the weather feel oppressive.
Some relief is expected as a low-pressure area develops over the Bay of Bengal. “During September 11 to 13, there will be cloudy conditions and rainfall over the state, and temperatures will come down slightly,” Rao said.
The IMD has forecast rain or thundershowers over Hyderabad during the period, with maximums likely to fall to around 31–32°C. Heavy rain has also been forecast in Telangana on Sept. 11. But the relief will be temporary. “It will soon rise slightly by 2 to 3 degrees and continue till the last week of the month,” Rao said.
