Hyderabad: Following the expansion of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the city’s policing structure has undergone a major overhaul with the creation of four distinct commissionerates.

The government’s administrative restructuring, formally concluded on Tuesday, has transformed Hyderabad into a “Mega City” by merging 27 surrounding municipalities and urban local bodies into the GHMC — placing it among the largest municipal corporations in the country.

New zonal offices at Uppal, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, Golconda and Rajendranagar are now fully operational. The earlier tri-commissionerate system has been replaced by four units: Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri (formerly Rachakonda), and the newly created Future City commissionerate.

The Hyderabad commissionerate has grown in significance with the addition of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad and the new High Court complex at Budvel. The future city commissionerate will oversee Chevella, Moinabad and Maheshwaram.

In line with the restructuring, IPS officers have been reassigned. Former Rachakonda commissioner G. Sudheer Babu has been appointed the first commissioner of Future City, while Avinash Mohanty has taken charge of Malkajgiri. Dr M. Ramesh has been posted to Cyberabad, and city police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar continues to head Hyderabad, which now includes Rajendranagar and Shamshabad zones.

Meanwhile, Yadadri-Bhongir has been delinked from the commissionerate system and will function as an independent district police unit under SP Akshansh Yadav.
