Medak: In a tragic incident from Telangana, a farmer died by suicide after his borewell failed, leading to his paddy crop drying up, and further aggravated when no one came forward to retrieve the fallen motor.
According to locals and police, the deceased, Malothu Shankar (45), was a farmer from Shankar Thanda in Shivvampet mandal, where he owned two acres of land and two borewells, and had planted paddy on both acres.
Five days ago, the borewell motor burned out. While it was being lowered back after repairs, the motor slipped and fell into the borewell along with four pipes. With no one willing to come and retrieve it, his paddy crop continued to dry up. The matter triggered quarrels that escalated over the last three days, and it is reported that his wife and family members had beaten him.
Distressed over the bore failure, crop withering and family members behaviour, Shankar left home on Tuesday night and was later found dead at his field, where he reportedly hanged himself. Police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem and are investigating the matter. Shankar is survived by his wife Padma, two sons and a daughter. Further details are awaited.
