Nalgonda: About 49,879 skilled and unskilled workers from Telangana migrated to foreign countries over the last five years, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs.

In an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, Khammam MP Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy sought details from the Centre on the number of Indian workers who migrated abroad as skilled, unskilled workers and professionals during the past five years, country-wise, and the measures taken for their welfare.

Replying to the question, minister of state for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the Government of India accords the highest priority to the safety, security, protection and well-being of Indian workers abroad. He said established mechanisms enable workers to approach Indian embassies or consulates whenever assistance is required.

Bharatiya Sahayata Kendras have been set up at key locations, including New Delhi, Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuala Lumpur, to provide guidance and counselling to Indian workers. Complaints related to employment issues are also taken up with local labour departments and other relevant authorities in host countries for redressal.

According to the data, the highest number of migrant workers from Telangana went to the UAE, with 18,585 workers over the past five years. This was followed by Saudi Arabia with 11,081 migrants. In addition, 3,665 workers migrated to Bahrain since 2020, 210 to Iraq, 4,274 to Kuwait, 4,274 to Oman, and 5,304 to Qatar during the same period.
