National Commission for Scheduled Tribes member Jatoth Hussain Naik on Thursday inspected Mamnoor airport and reviewed the project’s progress and arrangements with officials, describing it as a long-pending dream of the people of Warangal.

He said Telangana needed more airports to improve air connectivity, noting that Andhra Pradesh had six airports while Telangana had only one operational airport. He recalled that an airport had been established in Warangal during the Nizam era but had later fallen into disuse.

The revival of Mamnoor airport would improve transport facilities for people in Warangal and neighbouring districts and boost regional development, he said.

District collector Dr Satya Sharada briefed him on the project and land acquisition. She said 330 people would lose their land for the project, including 55 Scheduled Castes, one Scheduled Tribe, 214 Backward Classes and 60 from Other Castes.

She said priority was being given to protecting the constitutional rights of SCs and STs during the process.
