WARANGAL: Farmers in Mahbubabad and Mulugu districts of erstwhile Warangal staged protests and road blockades on Monday, demanding immediate supply of urea amid growing frustration over an acute shortage of the fertiliser.

In Mahbubabad, farmers from Guduru and Kesamudram mandals blocked the National Highway, causing a massive traffic jam. The protest was called off only after police assured that urea supply would be arranged.

In Bayyaram mandal, farmers have been queuing up outside agri-centers since Saturday morning, but many complained they have been unable to get urea for over a week. To reserve their place in line, some farmers even left their slippers in queues overnight.

At Sriramgiri village in Nellikuduru mandal, farmers staged a protest after waiting for over 36 hours without being supplied urea. They alleged that despite repeated visits to cooperative societies, no urea had been distributed for more than a week.

In a bizarre incident in Kuravi mandal, friends of a farmer, Shiva Krishna of Ayyavaripalli village, gifted him a bag of urea on his birthday after learning that he had failed to procure even one bag despite multiple attempts.

In Mulugu district, paddy farmers of Kalvapalli village in Tadvai mandal expressed anger over being allotted only one bag of urea after waiting in long queues for hours. They said their crop requires three to four bags and accused officials of ignoring their pleas, despite stock being available at agri-centres.

Mangalapally Hussain, national president of the National Human Rights for Justice, after inspecting several agri-centres in Mahbubabad, alleged that both the Central and State governments have failed to provide sufficient fertiliser to farmers cultivating paddy and maize. He urged officials to immediately resolve the crisis and ensure adequate urea supplies.
