Leopard Cub Killed By Speeding Vehicle Inside Amrabad
Though there is an official speed limit of 30 kmph for vehicles passing through the reserve, many drivers do not adhere to the speed limit: Officials
HYDERABAD: In the first reported roadkill involving a big cat, a leopard cub, believed to be around a year old or younger, was found dead along the National Highway 765, which passes through the Amrabad Tiger Reserve in Telangana.
According to the tiger reserve officials, the dead cub was found next to the highway in the Gundam forest beat late Sunday morning. While the 55-km-long stretch of the NH 765 that goes through the forest is known for frequent wildlife deaths, notably reptiles and animals such as jungle cats, this is the first time that a leopard, albeit a cub, has been found dead.
A post-mortem examination of the cub was conducted on Monday and the remains were burnt in accordance with protocols laid down by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, according to a press release from the tiger reserve officials.
Vehicular traffic passing through the reserve spikes on weekends as thousands of people head to the temple town of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh as the road through the reserve is the only route to Srisailam from the Telangana side. Though there is an official speed limit of 30 kmph for vehicles passing through the reserve, many drivers do not adhere to the speed limit, officials said, requesting people to follow the road rules while passing through the reserve.
