KARIMNAGAR: In a big boost to grassroots democracy, 11 women trained under the Rural Women’s Leadership Programme (RWLP) have been elected as ward members in the recent gram panchayat elections in Karimnagar district. Representing socially and economically marginalised communities, the women received leadership training from the NGO Democratic Sangha. To mark their success, a grand felicitation ceremony was organised at Kala Bharathi in Karimnagar on Wednesday.

Karimnagar district collector Pamela Satpathy attended the event as the chief guest and honoured the newly elected representatives. Addressing the gathering, the collector said women’s participation is vital for strengthening local governance and urged the ward members to focus on transparent, accountable and inclusive development in their villages.

The elected representatives are part of a larger initiative in which 18 women from various Mahila Sanghas contested the local body elections. Their success followed a year-long intensive training programme conducted by Democratic Sangha, a collective formed by 25 women’s groups across the district to promote leadership skills, civic awareness and confidence among rural women.

Democratic Sangha founder M.R.S.K. Chaitanya congratulated the winners for converting leadership training into electoral success. Co-founder and actress Regina Cassandra also addressed the gathering, praising the women for their courage in entering public life and inspiring others to participate in the democratic process. The programme concluded with trustee Alapati Deepthi highlighting the strength of collective action. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the newly elected women as they begin their role in local governance and community development.
