ADILABAD: The coal belt areas of the erstwhile Adilabad district have become a turf for political rivalry between BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and his sister, MLC K. Kavitha.

The development has assumed political importance after BRS elected Koppula Eshwar as the honorary president of the Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS), replacing Kavitha. Relations between the siblings have already been strained due to recent political developments.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway to unanimously elect Kavitha as the honorary president of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), a prominent trade union in Singareni. Political observers say this move is Kavitha’s way of sending a strong message to the BRS high command, particularly K.T. Rama Rao.

HMS general secretary Riyaz Ahmed confirmed that Kavitha will be unanimously elected at the union’s general body meeting in Srirampur, Mancherial district, on August 31. He said the decision was in recognition of her earlier contributions to the welfare of Singareni workers during her tenure as TBGKS honorary president.

Reports in political circles suggest that Kavitha will soon begin a tour of the coal belt areas, starting from Mancherial district. She had already announced plans to tour Singareni areas after Dasara. Sources indicate she is expected to hold a joint meeting with leaders of HMS and Singareni Jagruthi after returning from the USA.

According to insiders, HMS is preparing to intensify its union activities across all Singareni Collieries Company Limited divisions with Kavitha’s support. At present, HMS has a strong base in Godavarikhani, Srirampur, and Mandamarri, though its presence is weaker in other divisions.

It is also said that some newly recruited Singareni workers, appointed on compassionate grounds, are extending their support to Kavitha in Mancherial district.

Kavitha is also expected to participate in Bathukamma festival celebrations in Mancherial. She had attended the festival with great fanfare in Singareni areas during the Telangana agitation and in the years that followed. Recently, when former ZPTC of Pembi, Janu Bai of Nirmal district, met her with a request to attend, Kavitha assured she would join the festival events, usually held in September-October.
