Jurala Reservoir Flooded: 12 Gates Opened
Local residents report that this is the first time in the past 18 years that the Jurala gates have been lifted and water has been discharged in the month of May.
Mahabubnagar: Heavy rains in the upper reaches have caused a massive inflow into the Jurala reservoir. In response, officials have opened 10 gates to release water downstream. Local residents report that this is the first time in the past 18 years that the Jurala gates have been lifted and water has been discharged in the month of May.
Meanwhile, heavy rains in the Krishna River catchment areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra have significantly increased the reservoir’s inflows. The water flow into the Jurala project, which was 6,900 cusecs in the morning, surged to 80,000 cusecs by noon. The full reservoir level of the Jurala project is 9.657 TMC, and by 3 PM, the water level had already reached 7.682 TMC.
By 6 PM, the inflow stood at 66,000 cusecs, prompting officials to open the gates and release the excess water downstream.
Officials attribute the sudden rise in inflows to torrential rainfall in the regions surrounding the Ujani Dam in Maharashtra. Jurala Executive Engineer Zubair Ahmad stated that the floodwaters could rise further, potentially reaching one lakh cusecs by Thursday night.
