INTUC Calls For Labour Rights For Gig Workers

Hyderabad:The Telangana State Gig & Platform Workers Union on Monday hosted a training programme to raise awareness about worker rights, safety standards, and social security in the gig economy.

Speaking at the event, organised on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Telangana MLC Adanki Dayakar stressed the importance of extending labour protections to gig workers. He called for the inclusion of health benefits and welfare schemes, recognising their growing contribution to the economy.

G. Satyajeeth Reddy, a member of the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and vice-president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (Intuc), discussed global safety standards for gig workers. He asked all stakeholders to work towards formalising the gig workforce and integrate them into mainstream labour rights frameworks. He also announced that the ILO is working on a convention to protect gig and platform-based workers' rights.

R.D. Chandrasekhar, Intuc-Telangana general secretary, stressed the importance of occupational health and safety training for empowering gig workers. The programme included training sessions on occupational health and safety practices, the importance of social dialogue, legal rights awareness, and strategies for collective bargaining in the digital economy.
