Nizamabad: With the condition of excise constable Gajula Soumya, seriously injured in an attack by ganja smugglers in Nizamabad, deteriorating, she has been shifted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad.

One of her kidneys damaged in the attack has been removed. Her blood pressure is not under and she has several other issues. As her condition remains critical, Soumya will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for the next two days under constant supervision, hospital sources said.

Prohibition and excise minister Jupally Krishna Rao, excise commissioner C. Hari Kiran, and Nizamabad district collector Ila Tripathi are monitoring her condition.

An Excise team led by circle inspector Swapna had carried out a raid in Madhavanagar of Nizamabad on Friday night following reports of a ganja consignment in the area. Soon after the team arrived in two vehicles, the smugglers tried to escape in their car. When constable Soumya tried to stop them, they ran over her but hit an electric police. The smugglers abandoned the car and attempted to run away. While two escaped, the Excise team caught the other two.

Excise officials immediately shifted the seriously injured constable Soumya to a private hospital in Nizamabad. She has since been shifted to NIMS in Hyderabad.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, teary-eyed Gajula Chandrakala, mother of the injured constable and native of Mosra village in Nizamabad district, said: “Soumya has been a daring girl right from her childhood. She got the Excise constable’s job after her graduation in 2024. We are hopeful that Soumya will recover quickly.”

Prohibition and Excise deputy commissioner V. Somi Reddy disclosed that as per their information, Soumya will start recovering in two days. “We have arrested Syed Sohail and Mohammad Rahil. We are interrogating them to trace the other two smugglers,” Somi Reddy stated.
