Karimnagar: Social worker Shaik Chand Pasha facilitated the repatriation of the mortal remains of Mukkera Prasad, 40, a migrant worker from Jagtial district, who died in Bahrain. Prasad, a resident of Kondapur village in Metpally mandal, had travelled to Bahrain 15 months ago for work and died of a heart attack on March 16.

Chand Pasha said the repatriation was delayed for 45 days after an unidentified person, posing as a family member, allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh from the employer, resulting in the body being kept at Salmaniya Hospital mortuary.

Following a request from the deceased’s brother Rajesh, Pasha coordinated with the employer and the Indian Embassy, after which the company agreed to provide Rs 1.50 lakh in financial assistance and Rs 80,000 towards legal dues.

He said further coordination with the NRI Cell and the state government’s protocol department enabled arrangements for a free ambulance service after the body arrived by flight. The remains were handed over to the family at the airport and taken to their native village for last rites.
