A short-lived spell of rain and hailstorm cools Hyderabad briefly, but IMD forecasts rising temperatures and more heatwave days ahead in May.

Hyderabad: A brief spell of rain and hailstorm brought momentary relief to Hyderabad on Thursday evening, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a hotter-than-usual May ahead.

IMD’s latest monthly outlook predicts more heatwave days for Telangana in May. Most parts of the state, especially northern and central belts adjoining Maharashtra and Karnataka, are expected to see prolonged spells of extreme heat. This trend mirrors wider conditions across large areas of north, central, and east India this summer.

“People should be prepared for more frequent and intense heatwaves in the month of May. The impact will be higher in urban pockets where concrete surfaces trap heat,” said an IMD official.

While rainfall across India is projected to be above normal this month, the IMD has cautioned that parts of Telangana may see only limited improvement. This could worsen local heat conditions in areas already facing water stress. The forecast, based on the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) system using global climate models, also factors in neutral conditions of both the Indian Ocean Dipole and ENSO, which continue to influence the region’s weather patterns.

The IMD’s Hyderabad centre confirmed that light to moderate showers and isolated hailstorms were reported across the city and neighbouring districts including Jangaon, Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, and Siddipet, accompanied by surface winds below 40 km/h.

Officials said isolated showers may continue in the city for an hour and advised commuters to stay cautious and issued a yellow alert for several districts until May 4.

Alerts were issued for Vikarabad, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Bhupalpally and several other districts on May 2 and 3. By May 4, most districts, except Kamareddy, Medak, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Narayanpet, Wanaparthy and Jogulamba Gadwal, may witness thunderstorms and lightning.
