HYDRAA and BITS Goa To Set Up Low-Cost STP at Bum-Rukn-Ud-Dowla Lake

Hyderabad: HYDRAA, in collaboration with BITS Goa campus, is set to install a low-cost sewage treatment plant (STP) at the Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla lake in Rajendranagar.

HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath, on an invitation, visited the BITS Goa campus on Thursday to study the institute's low-cost vertical flow constructed wetland technology, which is designed to treat sewage in an efficient and environment-friendly manner.

The commissioner was accompanied by Younus Pervez, head of Vimos Technocrafts, which is supervising the lake restoration works by HYDRAA.

Professors explained that the technology not only improved water quality but also helped restore ecosystems and protect biodiversity. They said that the system had a much lower operating cost than many conventional methods.

Commissioner Ranganath said HYDRAA had ensured that restored lakes received fresh rainwater by improving inlets and preventing untreated sewage from entering them, and they are now exploring affordable methods to supply treated water to lakes throughout the year.

He said “HYDRAA, for the first time, is entering into sewage treatment of the developed lakes. Under CSR initiatives, BITS Goa is executing the work for HYDRAA for the Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla lake. Gradually, we will start expanding the sewage treatment works to other lakes as well.”
