Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has issued a flood alert as water levels in the Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs are nearing full tank level (FTL). There is a high probability of opening the flood gates of the reservoirs, depending on further rainfall.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Himayatsagar was just one foot below its FTL of 1,763.50 feet, recording 1,762.45 feet. The reservoir, with a storage capacity of 2.968 TMC, currently holds 2.687 TMC, with inflows of 500 cusecs. Osmansagar’s water level stood at 1,782.80 feet against its FTL of 1,790.00 feet. It now stores 2.474 TMC of water out of a total capacity of 3.90 TMC, with 50 cusecs of inflow.

With the current situation, officials said there is a high possibility of opening Himayatsagar’s flood gates to regulate water levels. If released, water will flow into the Musi River, potentially impacting low-lying areas downstream. The HMWSSB has alerted all relevant departments and local authorities to remain vigilant, activate flood preparedness measures and warn residents living downstream.
