Hyderabad: Continuing their efforts to ensure a safe and healthy Hyderabad, the city police on Friday asked the people to exercise more caution while purchasing mangoes as several shopkeepers were found to be ripening mangoes using chemicals.

In an advisory, the police said that mangoes started arriving at the markets with the onset of summer. However, people must not forget the harsh truth that hidden within these mouthwatering fruits was poisonous chemicals. Driven by greed for money, some selfish traders are putting the lives of people at risk.

“Mangoes that should naturally ripen are being artificially ripened using calcium carbide and other chemicals, and then sold. Buying every fruit that gleams on roadside carts, appearing extremely attractive with a golden hue, and assuming it's of good quality amounts to inviting illness upon oneself,” said Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar.

In a post on ‘X’, he said typically, a naturally ripened fruit won't be uniformly one color throughout, but fruits ripened with chemicals turn yellowish-green on the outside while remaining green inside, becoming toxic equivalents.

Medical experts warn that consuming such fruits can lead to immediate issues like throat irritation, stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea, along with long-term risks such as nervous system damage and respiratory problems.

The Hyderabad police are s already cracking down hard on such fraudulent traders who pose danger to public health. “We keeping a close watch on adulterated mangoes through H-Fast as well. Legal action is being taken against those violating regulations. I urge the public not to be deceived by appearances, to recognize natural authenticity, and to purchase fruits accordingly,” he said.

“Be cautious with mangoes that have unnatural color, chemical smell, or odd taste compared to naturally ripened ones. Realize that fruits with unusual spots or those that change color when washed in baking soda water are harmful to health,” he explained.

“If you come across information on artificially ripened mangoes, Dial 100 or the H-Fast phone number 8712661212,” he added.
