Hyderabad Metro Gets Rs.1,204 Cr VGF; No Central Aid for AP Projects

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I in Telangana has been implemented in PPP mode by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL).
A viability gap fund (VGF) of Rs.1,204 crore has been released for the project by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA). There is no metro project either under operation or under construction in the state of Andhra Pradesh and therefore no central financial assistance has been released.
The expansion of metro and other mass transit systems facilitates modal shift from private vehicles to public transport, thereby reducing congestion and vehicular emissions.
It also improves travel reliability and contributes to reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. At present, about 1159 km of metro rail network including RRTS is operational in 26 cities across the country.
This was stated by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal while responding to a question raised by the MP R Krishnaiah on metro rail expansion and urban mass transit projects of Telangana and AP.
