Hyderabad: A massive explosion rocked a scrap shop in Church Colony, Ramanthapur, on Sunday, triggering a fire and leaving a person critically injured.

As per reports, a used refrigerator compressor exploded at the scrap shop, which lead to a massive fire and leaving scrap dealer Thathari Parasuram  injured. The explosion is said to have occurred around 11.22 am, while metal-cutting work was underway at the shop.

B. Kashavulu, Divisional Fire Officer (DFO), Rangareddy-2, told Deccan Chronicle that a team of 12 firefighters reached the spot in two fire tenders without delay. “We found the shop owner, Parasuram, injured and we dialled 108, and ensured he was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for treatment. We also informed his family at their residence in Prem Nagar, Amberpet,” he said.

Personnel from the Moulali and L.B. Nagar fire stations also assisted in the operation. Firefighters safely evacuated four members of a family living in an adjacent building before beginning the operation. The fire was brought under control by 12.10 pm.

“Thanks to the prompt and effective firefighting, no loss of life was reported. The cause of the fire is being assessed,” Keshavulu said. Parasuram is undergoing treatment in the burns ward of Gandhi Hospital. Doctors have assessed his burns at around 70 per cent, and his condition remains critical, a police officer said.

Police, along with the Crime Detection Team (CLUES), visited the spot and collected samples. A case has been registered, and the investigation will proceed once the fire department’s report is received.

The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be established. “Preliminary investigation indicates possible negligence on the part of Parasuram. We suspect that scrap cutting may have triggered the fire and that a circuit board may have exploded,” the officer said.
