Hyderabad: HYDRAA said it had intensified lake cleaning and desilting works to ensure that rainwater flowed into lakes without obstruction to reduce the risk of flooding.

The agency was deploying its Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams to clear waste, remove silt from channels and check the condition of lake inlets and outlets.

The teams were also removing water hyacinth, weeds and thorny bushes around lakes to improve cleanliness and access, according to a statement.

The agency said it was prioritising lakes where Bathukamma celebrations would be held.

The DRF teams were cleaning Lingam Cheruvu and Doolapally cheruvu in Quthbullapur, Gopi Cheruvu in Lingampally, Gurnath Cheruvu, Pale Cheruvu and Maisamma Kunta in Miyapur, Bathukamma Kunta and Mansoorabad Lake in Hayathnagar, and Saroornagar Lake.

HYDRAA said it was also clearing inlets that carry rainwater into lakes and ensuring outlets allow water to flow freely.

The agency is taking up desilting work along the Kukatpally nala, where around 40 truckloads of waste have already been removed.

Silt has been cleared along nearly three kilometres of the channel to prevent obstructions to water flow.
