Hyderabad: People take part in a Tiranga bike rally to mark the 80th Independence Day at Begum Bazar Chhatri, in Hyderabad, Telangana, Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026.

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad woke up on Saturday to a vibrant Independence Day atmosphere, with the Tricolour adding colour to everyday life across the city. Children headed to schools in patriotic attire, residents gathered for flag-hoisting ceremonies in colonies and gated communities, while shops, offices and workplaces embraced the national colours. Patriotic songs from school and community programmes echoed across the city.

The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm across Hyderabad and its suburbs. Celebrations began early at educational institutions, government and private offices, business establishments and residential colonies, along with the official state-level programme.

Students dressed specially for the occasion made their way to schools and colleges, while residents of different age groups gathered at colony junctions to organise flag-hoisting and cultural activities. Parades, cultural performances, award ceremonies and distribution of sweets were held at various places.

Osmania University’s historic Arts College witnessed Independence Day activity, with students and visitors gathering on the campus. The national flag was seen atop the iconic building, while groups of students and visitors spent time on the lawns and pathways.

Gated communities across the city also marked the occasion with colourful celebrations. Residents decorated premises with saffron, white and green balloons. Children took part in programmes wearing Taekwondo uniforms and patriotic costumes, with one participant dressed in an Army-inspired uniform. Flag-hoisting, cultural programmes, felicitation ceremonies and distribution of certificates and gifts brought residents together.

Children across Hyderabad celebrated with patriotic enthusiasm, many wearing Tricolour-themed outfits and costumes representing national symbols. Carrying the national flag and taking part in activities, they added cheer to the celebrations.

The Tricolour also found its way into workplaces and commercial establishments. At the newly opened Lakeshore Mall at Y Junction in Moosapet, retail employees stepped away from uniforms and dressed in white sarees, kurtas and outfits featuring green and saffron.

“We rarely get to wear something beyond our dress code. I was very excited to drape a saree,” said a store employee.

Ranjith Kumar, a product manager and Kondapur resident, said he celebrated Independence Day with his child. “I dressed him up like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and took him around the neighbourhood, greeting and wishing everyone,” he said.

Ajay Kunde, a private school teacher, said he attended the school programme in the morning and later went out with friends.

In colonies and gated communities, residents gathered in the morning for flag-hoisting, speeches and community programmes before sharing snacks.

With regular office traffic reduced because of the holiday, roads appeared less congested. Cafes and restaurants welcomed families dressed in the colours of the Tricolour. Shops and eateries were decorated with saffron, white and green bunting, with some offering discounts. Stationery shops witnessed a rush as families and students bought flags and decorations.
