Hyderabad: Hyderabad woke to a cool morning on Monday after steady overnight rain left large parts of the city drenched. Kukatpally recorded 44 mm of rainfall by 8.30 am, the highest in GHMC limits, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society. Neighbouring Malkajgiri logged 42 mm, while Kapra and Alwal received 40 mm each.

The rest of the day saw only intermittent drizzle. By 9 pm, gauges showed minimal rainfall across city stations — Musheerabad at 4.5 mm, Asifnagar at 3 mm and Bandlaguda at 2.8 mm.

Districts bore the brunt of the weather. Mangapet in Mulugu recorded 186.5 mm by 9 pm, while Eturnagaram received 161 mm. Jainad in Adilabad logged 107 mm. Several centres in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mancherial and Jayashankar Bhupalpally also crossed 100 mm, leading to flooding in mines and low-lying villages.

Dr K. Nagratna, head of the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, said conditions remained favourable for further rainfall. “The synoptic conditions show the low-pressure area over the Bay has intensified,” she said. “In the next 24 to 48 hours, Telangana is likely to receive light to moderate rain at most places, with heavy to very heavy rain in northern and eastern districts. Red alerts have been issued for Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem.”

Hyderabad carried a yellow alert throughout the day, with the IMD predicting light to moderate showers between 30 and 50 mm, and the possibility of intense spells adding another 20 to 30 mm at night. Private forecasters echoed the outlook. Telangana Weatherman reported “non-stop heavy rains” in Mulugu, Bhupalpally, Asifabad, Adilabad and Nirmal, and cautioned Hyderabad about gusty winds reaching 45 to 55 kmph. GHMC also warned residents of waterlogging in low-lying areas and urged caution while travelling.

Temperatures remained low, with most parts of the city between 24°C and 26°C, a few degrees below the August average. Strong winds and persistent cloud cover kept conditions unusually cool for this time of year.
