Heavy Rains Lash Mulugu; Streams In Spate, Farmers Hopeful

Heavy rains battered Mulugu district on Wednesday, bringing widespread relief to farmers, while triggering flood-like conditions in several parts of the district.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Mulugu district received an average rainfall of 66.4 mm between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., precipitating heavy to very heavy rains in several mandals.

Eturnagaram recorded the highest rainfall of 122.8 mm, followed by Wazeedu (108.1 mm) and Kannayigudem (100.8 mm). Other significant rainfall figures included Mangapet (65.6 mm), Venkatapuram (62.9 mm), Tadvai (62.0 mm), Venkatapur (48.4 mm), Mallampalli (33 mm), Mulugu (32.8 mm), and Govindaraopet (27.3 mm).

The incessant rain led to streams and rivulets overflowing, inundating roads and low-lying areas across the district. Officials have warned people against attempting to cross flooded streams. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall over the next several hours.

The famous Bogatha Waterfalls, popular as Niagara of Telangana, witnessed a massive surge in water inflow following continuous rains. Floodwaters cascading from a height of nearly 50 feet across a width of 160 metres submerged the safety corridor near the falls. As a precautionary measure, authorities stopped tourists from approaching the waterfalls.

In Mangapet mandal, overflowing streams flooded agricultural fields in low-lying villages, while several tanks filled to capacity. Major streams, including Erravagu at Kamalapuram, Gouraramvagu at Mangapet, Musalammavagu at Rajupet, and Kappavagu are in full spate.

Connectivity to Bommaigudem village suffered after the Gouraram stream overflowed between Bommaigudem and Kothur Motlagudem, cutting off road access. In Wazeedu mandal, floodwaters damaged the diversion road constructed near the bridge across Isuka Vagu between Cheekupalli and Pedda Gollagudem. This has forced authorities to temporarily suspend traffic on National Highway 163, which connects Telangana to Chhattisgarh.

Mulugu district collector Borkhade Hemanth Sahadeorao reviewed the flood situation and directed officials to remain on high alert. Revenue, police and other departments have been instructed to closely monitor vulnerable areas and extend assistance wherever required.

In the interim, moderate rainfall has been reported in Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, and Bhupalpally districts. The sudden change in weather has brought optimism among farmers, many of whom have delayed agricultural operations due to the prolonged dry condition.

With adequate rainfall now replenishing water sources, farmers have begun preparing their fields for paddy transplantation.
